“The Perfect Joint Doesn’t Exis—” Yes. Yes It Does.

The joint is perhaps the most classic form of marijuana consumption amongst consumers, not to mention a celebrated communal pastime for cannabis enthusiasts all over the world. While there are celebrated joint rolling masters that walk amongst us mere mortals, most of us range from average joint rolling skills to clueless on the joint rolling steps. Just picture That 70’s Show, for example.

At least once every episode, the crew comes together in a hazy circle where they exchange stories and laugh over what we can only assume is a shared doobie*. Some of the best and most hilarious times of the show take place in that suburban basement setting. But have you ever noticed—we never actually see how they roll that mystery joint, let alone smoke on screen.

In our minds, we’re sure none of them actually knows how to roll a joint. (Well, maybe Steven.) We like to think they had a designated joint-rolling guy (that’s his official title, Joint Roller Guy) that was hired solely to pre-roll their joints so as not to embarrass any of these doob noobs on-screen.

*Disclaimer: Realistically, it’s probably just a fog machine, and nobody was actually consuming cannabis on the set of That 70’s Show.

Rolling Steps

The truth is, rolling a joint is an art. It’s also a skill that requires a bit of practice, and we’re going to attempt to teach you today. Thanks to our buds at Leafly, we were able to create some step-by-step instructions for one of the best ways to roll a joint. All you need is your favorite flower, some joint rolling papers, a grinder, heavy paper to form the crutch/filter, a pen or similarly shaped object for packing, and your own two hands.

Step 1: Grind It Up

You’ll want to break your cannabis down into shake. If you’re not sure what that is, check out our cannabis glossary! You can also use your hands to achieve this, but a grinder helps to keep your fingers from getting sticky-icky, which makes for a challenge come joint-rolling time.

Step 2: Create the Crutch

In this step, you’re going to create a filter to place at one end of the joint rolling paper. It’s not mandatory, but a crutch will help if you’re not too keen on inhaling weed bits with your smoke. It also provides a place to hold and pass the joint without getting burned.

You can make a crutch out of pretty much anything, but some thin cardstock or paper of similar sturdiness is best. Additionally, you may find your joint rolling papers came handy with crutch material. From here, you will start folding your paper three or four times in sort of a zig-zag type pattern, similar to an accordion, until it forms an M-shape. Once folded, roll it up like a burrito once or twice around until it resembles a tube and reaches the desired thickness of your joint. Voila! You have a filter.

Step 3: Fill It Up

Now that you’ve created your crutch, place it at the end of your joint rolling paper, then fill the paper with your shake. A good rule of thumb is about ½ to 1 gram of fine-ground cannabis.

Step 4: Pack It In

Once it’s all loaded up to your liking, it’s time to start forming and rolling the joint. Start shaping by running your fingers along the top and bottom in a back and forth motion, compacting the cannabis and the crutch in the paper. As you begin rolling, a cone shape should form.

Step 5: Roll, Roll, Roll Your Joint

(The reason we say “joint rolling papers” in the plural sense is because it’s not likely you’ll prevail on the first try. If so, you’re a weed wizard and no longer need our rolling steps tutorial services.)

This step will either make or break how the finished product turns out (or if it turns out at all). Once you’ve pinched the paper between your fingers, compacted the cannabis, and formed your cone shape, starting with the crutch side, tuck the non-sticky side of the rolling paper into the cone and continue rolling. Once you’ve reached the edge, give the remaining sticky paper side a lick and roll the joint until you can secure that side onto the outside of the paper. Then, seal it up.

Step 5.5: Start Over

Fail miserably, get frustrated, grab another joint rolling paper and start the rolling steps again. (we’ve all been there)

Step 6: Finish It Off

After sealing and securing your joint, poke at the end with a pen, tip of a shoelace, or any other similar object. This will help to further compact the cannabis into your beautifully wrapped joint. Then lightly twist your joint rolling paper at the tip to close it off completely.

Step 7: Enjoy! (optional but recommended)

Grab your lighter and spark it up! Or set it down and leave it alone, frame it, admire it — the choice is yours. Enjoy your hard work however you please!

Step 8: Go For Joint Ninja Skills

There are countless ways to roll a joint - so start practicing — and remember, practice makes the perfect puff. Try cross joints, pinners, tulips, and more. Make it big, keep it small, or try your hand at some full-blown cannabis origami art.
