Anxiety and weed. Weed and anxiety. There’s been a lot of talk for a long time, and not a lot of it seems particularly definitive.

Yes, many claim that marijuana is a miracle cure for anxiety and PTSD. However, some conflicting claims pin heightened anxiety on cannabis use. So, which is it? Does weed help alleviate stress and PTSD, or does it worsen it?

Well, the short answer is yes…sometimes.

Wait, what?

Weed research, thanks to Federal restrictions on research into the effects of Schedule 1 drugs, is still in its infancy. What we know is intriguing and hopeful; however, there are currently no conclusive facts.

So, what do we know? Let’s look at the facts, what we think we know, what is (for now) still murky, and which are the best strains for anxiety.

What We Do Know About Marijuana and Anxiety

Because of the above-mentioned Federal research restrictions, there is a severe shortage of actual high-quality controlled studies out there. We have self-reports and other observational studies, which, while encouraging, are not definitive.

What We Think We Know About Marijuana and PTSD

In patient self-reporting evaluations, the New Mexico Medical Cannabis program found a greater than 75% reduction in PTSD symptoms in 80 patients evaluated before and after medical cannabis use. This is an encouraging result, and we should feel optimistic about medical marijuana and PTSD.

Many self-reporting studies and surveys of medical cannabis patients show that marijuana use as an alternative treatment reduces the use of opioids, alcohol, and anti-anxiety medications.

The above findings infer that cannabis helps reduce the perception of pain and anxiety (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0269881117699616) (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22880540/).

A growing body of research indicates that not all weed, strains, and THC levels heighten anxiety. This is important since we know that different strains deliver different effects.

Early reports indicate that high levels of THC appear to contribute to increased perceived anxiety in some, while lower doses decrease stress.

However, more extensive analyses of available literature show that, at worst, cannabis has a minimal effect on increasing anxiety. Most meta-analyses and systematic reviews indicate a dire need for high-quality studies before reaching concrete conclusions.

What’s Clouded

Pretty much all of it, if what you’re looking for is definitive science and absolute answers that separate placebo effect and external influences from tightly controlled research.

What Matters

Here’s the thing—patient reviews do matter, and self-reported perceptions of effects are meaningful. If a person uses cannabis for anxiety or PTSD reduction and feels they’ve seen positive results, that’s great!

Your results are what matter to you, and we’re here to help you find the best product for your needs.

We’ve had a chat with our Wellness Experts, whose experience mirrors our expectations—it’s all about the species and strain.

What Are the Best Strains for PTSD and Anxiety?

Sativa and Sativa-Hybrids

Sativas have a reputation for increasing anxiety in those already prone. High amounts can sometimes cause anxiety in folks who don’t usually tend that way. Yes, they’re energetic, and sure, they can deliver a terrifically focused cerebral high, but if you’re looking to calm anxiety or PTSD? Sativas and sativa-heavy hybrids are probably not the routes you want to take.

Indica and Indica-Hybrids

Indica strains are known for their more calming, peaceful highs. Anxiety, a normal human response to stressors but sometimes grabs those reins and runs us off through the brush, appears to respond well to indica strains.
